Former volunteer Paula, joined North Ayrshire Citizens Advice Service after she was made unemployed. She was kind enough to share her experience with us. Read below to find out more about her volunteering experience.
Why did you want to volunteer?
When I was made unemployed, I knew it could take a while to get a job again; I decided to look for an opportunity to keep myself focused and use my time productively. I wanted to be able to use the skills I had while gaining new ones and at the same time, improve my chances in gaining lasting employment. I had always been interested in the CAB and the services they provide and I wanted to be able to help people and make a difference, however small.
How was your experience?
I had a very positive, happy and rewarding experience during my time with CAB. I also felt it was a privilege to be given the chance to go through the invaluable training and meet many wonderful people.
What did you get from volunteering?
I got many things from volunteering with CAB. I wanted to push myself to try something new, and as all new endeavours do, it put me outside my comfort zone, which is what I personally needed to do. I was a little nervous starting the training and meeting a new group of people but I was also excited too, it gave me a real sense of purpose while I was going through the trials of trying to find a new job, I really learned a lot and met some amazing people along the way.
How did volunteering help you?
I think my time volunteering helped me in many ways. It gave me confidence at a low point and I believe it contributed to my being offered my current job.
I really felt I had a sense of purpose during the training and beyond and for me personally I knew I was on the right path. I hope to be able to work at CAB again in the future as a volunteer or in a paid capacity.
What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering?
I would definitely say go for it! I would highly recommend volunteering for so many reasons, learning new skills, building confidence, meeting new people, making new friends and helping to find paid employment.
